Mount St. Peter is the northernmost part of the vast plateau that stretches between Maastricht and Belgian Liege. It is a nature reserve and popular recreation area, famous for the 18th century Fort of St. Peter. It was built as a defensive structure against French raids. Under the fortress and the mountain are the famous casemates of St. Peter - an extensive system of tunnels and passages that have been formed over many centuries. At one time, there were more than 20,000 passes with a total length of 200 kilometres. Some of these aisles were expanded to accommodate warehouses, bakeries and even chapels during World War II. Casemates were also used to protect the city's cultural treasures, including the legendary "Night Watch" by Rembrandt. For tourists, special guided tours are organized, during which they will tell you about the history of the fortress and the catacombs.
