The Farin House or the Cologne Perfume Museum is quite popular with tourists from all countries and, you guessed it, it is located in Cologne at Obenmarspforten, building 21.
In 1709, in Cologne, the Italian perfumer (or pharmacist?) Johann-Maria Farina, using the method of "free tyke" (as historians say), mixing various aromas, created fragrant water, which he called "Cologne water" (Kölnisch Wasser), trademark "red tulip ". However, the French brought world fame to Cologne water with the name cologne, who actively bought it and used it in their homeland. True, the French used a less concentrated perfume solution. The word cologne comes from the French "Eau de Cologne".
This perfume scent has collected the smells of Italian oranges, lemons, bergamot and many mountain herbs of Italy, which reminded Johann Maria Farina of his homeland. Longing for her and pushed him to create this masterpiece of perfumery. The Italian master brought fame to Cologne, and his statue installed on the building of the city hall.
The Museum of Cologne Spirits "House of Farin" is located not far from the Cologne Cathedral, which discovered next to the central railway station, it is not difficult to find it.
In addition to acquaintance with the history of Cologne "Cologne water" in the museum itself, you can also see the furniture used by the Farin family and some works of art of that era. The guides will show and tell you everything. After such a tour of the Farin House Museum, you will go down to the basement of the building, where you will see the process of the production of Cologne water. You will offer to smell the essence itself and various shades of eau de toilette and Cologne. Of course, you can buy an actual cologne here as a souvenir.
You can get all the necessary information and find out the opening hours of the perfume museum in Cologne on the Farin House-Museum of Spirits website.
However, do not confuse the "Museum of Spirits Farina" and "House of cologne 4711", located at st. Glockengasse, 4. These are completely different scents, both in smell and composition.
There is a legend that the recipe for cologne "4711" belongs to the family of the banker Mullens, who received it from a monk whom he saved under some circumstances. The numbers indicate the number of the house where the family of the banker Mullens lived. The House of Cologne has an exciting exhibit - a perfume fountain. You can dip your hands into it, and then the aroma of this eau de toilette will stay with you all day. The cologne house has both men's and women's fragrances. There is a museum on the second floor, a shop on the first. The entrance to this museum is free. Also, pay attention to the original musical clock with bells under the roof of the House of Cologne 4711; you will love it.
Today, these two old factories for the production of Cologne water are still challenging the right to invent it.
Opening hours of this museum: Monday-Friday 9: 00-19: 00, Saturday 9.00-18: 00.
