The church was built in the first half of the 11th century on the territory of the monastery of the Holy Apostles and  an atypical structure among other religious buildings of its kind. This atypicality expressed in the fact that the choirs of the church were placed not on the east side, as is customary, but on the west. From the old church in the current structure, only the walls of the main and transverse western naves have survived, the rest destroyed as a result of a major fire in 1192. After the fire, the church was rebuilt, at the same time moving the choir to the east side, and in their place from the west, an elegant west work with the main tower was attached. At the same time, the most remarkable church detail appeared above the eastern crossroads - an octagonal dome-octagon with two small turrets, and the altar redesigned in the form of a cloverleaf, as in the Church of St. Martin.
Like most religious buildings in Cologne, the Church of the Holy Apostles badly damaged by Allied air raids, but in 1957 was rebuilt in the initial stage. The restoration work was completed only in the early 2000s, and in 2010 the church received the status of a parish church, and now it hosts Catholic services.
The Church of the Holy Apostles is a Romanesque three-nave basilica with two transepts. In its main hall, along the walls, are displayed colourful sculptural images of the 14 holy Apostles, made in the 16th-18th centuries. It is located at Apostelnkloster, 10 and is open for admission every day, except Tuesday, during those hours when the service is not in progress, namely from 10.00 to 12.00 and from 15.00 to 17.00. The entrance is free. Nearby is the Neumarkt metro station, combined with a stop of trams No. 1,7,9 and buses No. 136 and 146.
