In the south of the city, there is a unique museum of European gardening in the world, which combined with the Museum of Natural History. In the north - the Aquazoo Museum, which includes a green area with old buildings and valuable trees (zoo), the Natural History Museum.
A park with animals - a zoo - really existed before and was opened in 1876 by the famous zoologist Alfred Brehm. But even then, the emphasis was on building and preserving a "green oasis", spreading knowledge of zoology and botany. The zoological garden was considered one of the most outstanding landscape systems in Düsseldorf. Nicely decorated squares with valuable trees and rich clubs, a cosy restaurant, interconnected ponds. The zoo itself with animals was not numerous compared to the zoos in Hamburg, Cologne or Berlin, although there were about 1200 representatives of the animal world.
In the First World War, the entire animal composition of the zoo was destroyed, the restaurant was confiscated by the French occupation authorities. Nevertheless, the decision was made to renovate, and the zoo even made a profit. During the November bombing in 1943, the entire zoological complex with parks plunged into ruins. The zoo was no longer restored, but the name - the zoo - has survived. The restoration and reconstruction of the park itself took place in 1951. Some of the sculptural exhibits were preserved; they are presented in the current zoo in the northern part of the city.
The modern Düsseldorf Zoo covers an area of 13.06 hectares, which houses unique tree species, a pond, sports grounds, children's playgrounds, a football field, places for relaxation and sunbathing. The zoo is focused on landscape attractions and recreation areas.
Unfortunately, in 2014 the zoo suffered another destruction due to Hurricane Ela. Serious losses consisted of 158 lost plant species. By 2016, more than 48 saplings restored as replacements. A large proportion of private and urban investment spent on the development and maintenance of the Düsseldorf Zoo.
The Aquazoo Museum itself - Aquazoo Löbbecke Museum is a huge modern institute engaged in laboratory research, environmental protection, educational work for children and adults. On the territory of the Museum, there are exhibitions and various thematic circles. The total area of 6.800 square meters is home to 560 species of animals. There are 80 aquariums in 25 themed exhibition halls with a total volume of 613,000 litres of water. In addition to the Tropical Pavilion, there are over 60 terrariums, as well as 1,400 collection objects and interactive media exhibitions. The technical equipment for the operation of the building and the animals is at the highest level. The feed is sourced directly from organic farming much of the animal feed is grown in-house.
The Aquazoo Löbbecke Museum offers guided tours of the history of evolutionary biological diversity: from the origin of living things in the water, distribution in the world's oceans, to settling in habitats on land. Thematic rooms present aspects of evolution, taxonomy, fascinating adaptations, various habitats.
A variety of educational and educational programs aimed at learning and positive attitudes towards the values of nature. Many children's programs are designed to reduce fear, disgust, and prejudice about certain types of animals. It is remarkable that the Museums also include holiday programs for holding birthday parties for children, lectures, information tables, and advanced training for adults. Any child and adult can arrange a custodial program in the form of sponsorship for any chosen animal. Sponsorship programs are in great demand among the population!
