Baden-Württemberg is located in the southwestern part of Germany and is famous for its beautiful landscapes and medieval towns, cosy villages and historic castles. And among them is the fantastic Lichtenstein Castle (Schloss Lichtenstein). This castle is located on a cliff, rising to a height of 817 meters above sea level, in a place called Honau - this is one of the most beautiful places in Germany.
The castle was originally built as a fortress in 1200 and was destroyed at least twice - in the Reichskrieg War in 1311 and 1381. In 1802, the land on which the castle was located was the property of the Württemberg king Frederick I, who turned the castle into a hunting lodge. In 1837, his nephew, Duke Wilhelm Urach, became the owner of the castle. Impressed by the historical novel by German writer Wilhelm Hauff about Liechtenstein, the Duke from 1840 to 1842 built the castle in the form in which we can see it today.
The building is built in a romantic style, the lower rooms are carved directly into the rock that supports it. The castle houses a large collection of armour and historical weapons. All conditions for visitors have been created near the castle, there are playgrounds, a barbecue and a restaurant for 45 people. There is a car park about 200 meters from the castle. The castle is open daily from April to October, in November, February and March only on weekends and on public holidays, and closed in January and December. By appointment, you can also book a tour for the group, which will allow you to learn much more about the armoury rooms and the Gothic chapel, the knight's hall and the king's rooms.
The castle looks most picturesque in spring and autumn when the trees on the mountain slopes change their colour at the border of the seasons. The castle offers a majestic view of the rocks, the village below and much more.
This castle should not be confused with the castle of the same name, located in Austria.
